2009 Rally for Recovery

“I sincerely thank both of you for your lucid & thought provoking talks given to our members today, titled 'Building Bridges: The Importance of Integrating Primary & Mental Health Care.' I am sure all doctors present will seriously rethink seeing a mental health sufferer with a new vision – as a 'person' & not as a disease."

Rally for Recovery World Tour

The Story behind the Rally for Recovery World Tour:

The alarming burden of mental disorders

According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 4 people, or 25% of individuals, develop one or more mental disorders at some stage in life.  Today, 450 million people suffer from mental disorders in both developed and developing countries.  Mental illnesses are common to all countries and cause immense suffering. People with these disorders are often subjected to social isolation, poor quality of life and increased co-morbidity and mortality. Mental health problems represent 5 of the 10 leading causes of disability worldwide; amounting to nearly one-third or the disability in the world.  These disorders are the cause of staggering human, economic and social costs.

Treatment works.  Recovery is possible.

Mental disorders can now be diagnosed reliably and treated effectively. Recovery rates for mental illnesses surpass the treatment success rates for many other physical illnesses, including heart disease.  Recovery rates include: Schizophrenia, 60%, bipolar disorder, 80%, manor depression, 65% to 80%, and addiction treatment, 70% (Report of the National Advisory Mental Health Council, March 1998).

But there are barriers to recovery.

As many as two-thirds of all people with a diagnosable mental disorder do not seek treatment whether for fear of being stigmatized, fear that the treatment may be worse than the illness itself, or lack of awareness, access and affordability of care.

Cultural stigma, discrimination, and a fragmented mental health system continue to entrap people with mental illnesses in lives of quiet desperation and endanger their lives.

In July 2006, ASHA International launched its signature program, the Rally for Recovery World Tour.

ABOUT THE RALLY FOR RECOVERY WORLD TOUR:  The Rally for Recovery World Tour is the first of its kind global public education campaign lead by an individual living with mental illness.  The Rally for Recovery seeks to improve the general understanding of mental illness and promotes recovery.  With grassroots support from mental health and community organizations around the world, the Rally for Recovery accomplishes its goals through Rallies held across the world.

OUR GOAL:  To develop collaborative partnerships with mental health organizations around the world and present the Rally for Recovery annually. We offer our partners a Menu of Programs  to choose from and customize the programs to best serve the needs of our audiences.

OBJECTIVE:  To engage & empower the four pillars of recovery –individuals with mental illness, their families, care-providers and communities to create a person-centered, culturally-competent, recovery-oriented system of care.
