A Candle in the Dark: A Journey from Adversity to Advocacy - Keynote Address by Gayathri Ramprasad – 60 minutes 

A Candle in the Dark, Gayathri’s signature keynote takes audiences on a journey from darkness to light, entrapment to empowerment and hopelessness to hope.  The presentation covers critical issues frequently faced by those dealing with severe mental illness:  Stigma, lack of awareness, and other barriers to treatment and recovery, suicide attempts, hospitalizations, problems with interpersonal relationships, the difficult road to acceptance, the trials and tribulations of treatment, relapses, the critical development of coping strategies, and the ultimate triumph of living a purposeful, fulfilling life.

Gayathri Ramprasad, MBA, is a Mental Health Consultant and a Social Entrepreneur, with a unique insight into the world of mental illness. Real People. Real Recovery. – Panel Presentation – 60 minutes 

Real People, Real Recovery is a unique Recovery Education Program presented by individuals living with mental illness. Empowered by a growing awareness about the causes of mental illness, and emboldened by hope and recovery, individuals with mental illness are daring to break the silence and provide the world a rare and powerful perspective into the trials of living with mental illness and the ultimate triumph of recovery. 

 

Demystifying Mental Illness - A Community Education Program - 120 minutes 

Mental Illness – the very phrase conjures up images of forlorn loved ones or frenzied, unkempt people lurking on sidewalks and in dark alleys, talking to themselves, lost in a world of their own.  Myths about mental illness abound, and the statistics of its incidence and impact on our common humanity are astounding.  Scientific breakthroughs hold the promise of recovery.  Yet, stigma entraps people with mental illness and endangers their lives. Demystifying Mental Illness educates, empowers and inspires audiences to join forces in paving the path to recovery. 

 

THRIVE: Transforming Trauma into Triumph – A Recovery Institute – All Day 

This innovative and highly interactive workshop will empower participants to create and implement their Personalized Recovery Action Plans.  Drawing from her experience of life-threatening mental illness and her extensive experience as a global mental health advocate, Gayathri will address critical issues affecting people living with mental illness: stigma, lack of awareness, barriers to treatment and recovery, relapses, suicide attempts, hospitalizations, medications, problems with interpersonal relationships, and much more. 

Participants will leave the workshop with a renewed sense of hope and solidarity, and a wide array of tips and tools to transform the trauma of mental illness to the triumph of recovery and reintegration.

 

Ask the Experts – Panel Presentation – 60 minutes 

Ask the Experts is a panel presentation by mental health professionals, providing the audience an opportunity to learn about successful treatment modalities and new and emerging treatment technologies.  

 

Recovery Roundtable –– 240 minutes 

Recovery is a team sport, not an individual endeavor.  Recovery Roundtable strives to engage & empower the four pillars of recovery – individuals with mental illness, their families, healthcare providers and communities to create person-centered, culturally-competent, recovery-oriented systems of care. 

 

Devrai: Winner of 16 Awards including the Presidential Silver Medal, India  - Film followed by Panel Discussion – 150 minutes 

The film demystifies schizophrenia, a mental disorder, giving it a human face. The film operates on the simple theme of a family coming to terms with the disease and learning to live with it, realizing that the disease is not curable, but can be controlled with medication. There is no permanent solution to it, only momentary reprieves … 

 

Out of the Shadow: Winner of the prestigious 2006 NAMI Media Award -     Film followed by Panel Discussion – 120 minutes 

When documentary filmmaker Susan Smiley decided she was finally ready to turn the camera on her own family, the result became out of the shadow, the story of her family's secret struggle to deal with her mother's schizophrenia within the confines of the public health system. This film is a story of madness and dignity, shame and love, illuminating a national plight through one family’s journey.

 

Men Get Depression – Documentary followed by Panel Discussion – 90 minutes

How is it possible in the country leading the world in medical science, one in four men have a disabling illness that torments them and their families and most never receive treatment for it?

Men of all ages, ethnic origins, and walks of life get depressed…so why don’t men look for help?  They may feel weak or ashamed - that it’s not "manly" to feel sad.  Men Get Depression is a public awareness campaign that will help men and their families dealing with depression understand they are not alone. 

Getting help for depression can make a big difference in your life and in the lives of those who love you.  Men Get Depression will show you how to get started. 

 

Documenting our Presence: Multicultural Experiences of Mental Illness – Documentary followed by Panel Discussion – 60 minutes

Documenting Our Presence: Multicultural Experiences of Mental Illness is a compassionate, hopeful look at the experiences of people of diverse backgrounds, affected by serious mental illness.

The documentary traces their lives through a cultural lens, focusing on the onset of mental illness, the process of coping and acceptance, and finally, their journey to recovery.
