2009 Culture Counts

In mainstream society depression and mental illness are still somewhat taboo subjects; in the Latino community they are topics that are often shrouded in secrecy. As a result millions of Latino men, women and children are suffering in silence or getting treatment only in the most extreme circumstances – in emergency rooms, homeless shelters, and prisons. Lack of awareness about mental health issues and access to affordable, culturally-responsive care deters many from seeking life-saving treatment and supports.

In May 2009, ASHA International will be presenting Abriendo Mentes, Abriendo Corazones, Open Hearts, Open Minds - A series of 4 community education programs featuring Luncrecia Suarez, LCSW to promote mental health awareness within the Latino community and enhance cultural-responsiveness among the healthcare providers.
